Why did you become a developer?
I didn’t at first, I sort of fell into it. Originally I was considering a degree in Product Design after gaining an interest in Design Technology at school. But after hearing that only 1% of graduates manage to get employment I decided to switch tracks. I studied Computing Science and enjoyed the Web and Multimedia modules as they combined design with technology, something that I continued with until I completed my degree.
How/where did you start in the industry?
After graduating I was contacted by a previous colleague who asked if I wanted to work as a graduate developer at Bright Fox Solutions. Following this I moved to Propeller Communications, where I worked for several years. These companies gave me my first real experience working for Digital Agencies, before I moved onto working in Leicester.
What do you do now?
I work as a Developer primarily Frontend for Effect, working on a wide variety of projects and using various technologies. Over the last 18 months I’ve enjoyed working with Serpentine Galleries, Panache, London City Aiport, and LCB’s Design Season – a personal local favourite.
If you weren’t a developer, what do you think you’d be doing instead?
Product design. Going back to the decision I made before starting university it was almost a 50/50 decision so I would have opted to go-ahead with my original choice. I love combining practically with design, which is not too dissimilar from being a Front-end developer so I guess I would have always ended up in a field that balances the two. Other than that multimedia or audio/visual effects.
What would you have as your last ever meal?
Well if it’s my last meal I’m going all out…
Starter – Garlic & parsley mushrooms in Filo Pastry basket (had this at San Carlo once – amazing!)
Main – Chilli con Carne / Curry Nanwich from Gray’s cafe (it’s a close call)
Desert – Sticky Toffee Pudding with ice cream.
If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
That’s easy. Flight. I love the idea of being able to fly around and see places from a different vantage point. Also no passports or tests before flying. Perfect! 😀
